The Sessions
Initial Session
Therapy begins with an initial session where you talk about your concerns, desires and therapy goals, and your psychologist discusses how they can work with you to achieve these. In this session, you therefore have the opportunity to determine whether they are the right person to help you get where you want to be. Making the choice to meet with a therapist is often a difficult and important step and it is vital that you feel comfortable, respected and safe.
Subsequent Sessions
Following this, the number of sessions will depend on the amount and complexity of your concerns and challenges. It will also be determined by when you feel you have reached a place of contentment and/or achieved your therapy goals. Generally, as you are getting closer to achieving your desired outcomes, the sessions become more spread out. You, the client, will be the first to know when you no longer need to attend and this will be regularly reviewed. Some clients achieve their desired outcome in one session, many take longer. There is no right or wrong way, it takes whatever amount of time it needs to take.
Sessions last anywhere between 30 and 50 minutes. How long it takes depends on when you feel you have achieved what you came in for on that day. Your psychologist will most likely give you homework to do outside of your sessions in order to maximise the time you have together.
